A stocked urban lake in the ACT with a boat ramp, where golden perch and Murray cod are put in and redfin turn up as well. A low-pressure place for warm-season native fish on the fly.
Lake Tuggeranong is a stocked urban lake in the ACT, and the case for it is simple: native fish in a water that, in our experience, sees little fly pressure, a short trip from town, with a boat ramp if you want to get off the bank.
It is one body of water with a launch point on it, not a river cut into reaches, so the choice is about how you fish it rather than where you drive. The access card shows the three launch and jetty points the ACT Government lists. Pick the one nearest the water you want to work and walk the edge from there.
The easy trip: golden perch in the warm months. Golden perch have been stocked here over many years and are the fish I would plan around. From late spring through summer, fish a weighted streamer slowly along drop-offs and the edges of weed, and let it sit between strips. Fish low light first, then slow down and go deeper through the middle of the day.
The harder trip: Murray cod on structure. Murray cod are stocked here too. They are a different sort of day: a big fly, a short leader, and casts tight to hard edges at dawn and dusk. Do not drive up expecting one. Treat a cod as a bonus on a perch trip, and check the current ACT fishing guide before you fish: no rule specific to this lake was found.
Redfin are recorded here as well, and a small baitfish pattern will sometimes find them while you are fishing for perch.
Read the ACT fishing guide, then pick a calm morning and start at the ramp.
