A Victorian reservoir set against the Grampians escarpments, stocked with brown and rainbow trout and fished with loch-style tactics, streamers and dries.
Wartook Reservoir is one of Victoria’s most scenic trout waters, set against the Grampians sandstone escarpments, and you go for brown and rainbow trout on fly. The water carries a tea-coloured tannin stain that still leaves enough visibility for trout to feed confidently in the shallows.
In light wind, loch-style tactics are highly effective. In autumn and winter, trout cruise rocky shores and flooded margins after baitfish, mudeyes and invertebrates, so a streamer is the fly to start with. In spring the midge, mayfly and caddis pick up and trout take dry flies readily in calm weather. Read the Victorian Fisheries Authority guide before you fish.

Water and habitat

The reservoir sits among the Grampians escarpments, and its water is stained the colour of weak tea. That tannin leaves trout comfortable feeding close in, so do not rule out the shallows. As the water cools, trout often patrol surprisingly shallow water through the day.

Fish and forage

Brown trout and rainbow trout have both been stocked here across many seasons, and the stocking chart shows when. The trout work rocky shores and flooded margins in autumn and winter for baitfish, mudeyes and invertebrates. Spring brings more midge, mayfly and caddis.

When to fish it

Autumn and winter are streamer time along rocky shores and flooded margins. Spring is the time to carry dry flies, especially in calmer weather, when the midge, mayfly and caddis are more active.

How to fish it

Loch-style tactics are highly effective in light wind. As the water cools, trout often patrol shallow water, so in our experience the margins are a good place to start. Through autumn and winter, work a streamer along rocky shores and flooded margins; in spring, fish dry flies when the weather is calm.

Access and safety

Read any signs on the ground before you fish. As on any large water, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back, and keep an eye on the wind before you head out.

Regulations

Before you fish, read the current Victorian Fisheries Authority guide and take any season, bag and size limits and licence requirements from it.
