A Queensland dam on Burnett Creek south of Boonah, stocked with Australian bass, golden perch, Mary River cod and silver perch, with lily edges and standing timber to fish.
Lake Maroon is a dam on Burnett Creek, about 20 km south of Boonah, and the reason to drive there is bass on the surface at the edges of the lilies.
Start at first or last light along the lily edges or any standing timber, where the surface bite is reliable. Australian bass are the fish to plan for. Check Seqwater’s site for facilities and dam alerts before you go.

Water and habitat

Maroon Dam is an impoundment on Burnett Creek, owned by Seqwater. After a long spell of stable water, the thick band of water lilies has come back to its historic position along the lake’s edges. Where lilies meet open water, and around standing timber, is where to put your effort.

Fish and forage

Australian bass, golden perch, Mary River cod and silver perch are the species stocked into the dam. FlyLife’s writers describe the bass as sitting close to the edges here, without the dramatic shift into deep water seen in some other bass lakes. Atlas of Living Australia records list flathead gudgeon and western carp gudgeon, which are small natives rather than angling fish.

When to fish it

The lake fishes a little differently with the seasons, but not dramatically. Early morning and evening are the dependable windows for a surface bite close to the lily edges or timber.

How to fish it

Work the lily edges and standing timber at dawn and dusk, where the surface bite is reliable.

Access and safety

Maroon Dam is on Maroon Dam Road, Maroon, Qld 4310. Seqwater owns the dam, so check its site for current facilities and dam alerts before a trip. Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

Regulations

Read the current Queensland fishing rules from Fisheries Queensland before you fish.
