Map data and credits
Castabout’s maps and figures come from open data and licensed services. The map itself names the sources for what it’s drawing; this page lists them all, with their licences.
Base maps
- Topo is drawn from the Protomaps basemap, built from OpenStreetMap data. © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. Castabout serves an Australian extract from its own tile server, restyled in its own colours.
- Hillshade and 3D terrain come from Terrain Tiles (Mapzen/Tilezen, on AWS Open Data). For Australia these include SRTM, GMTED2010, ETOPO1 and data © Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia), CC BY 4.0. Full list: Tilezen attribution.
- Satellite imagery is Esri World Imagery, powered by Esri. Source: Esri, Vantor, GeoEye, Earthstar Geographics, CNES/Airbus DS, USDA, USGS, AeroGRID, IGN, and the GIS User Community. It’s also used for the satellite pictures on water cards and pages. Labels, roads and water lines on top come from Protomaps and OpenStreetMap.
- Map labels use Noto Sans, under the SIL Open Font License, from Protomaps’ basemap assets.
Waters, reaches and lakes
- River, reach and lake shapes come from the Australian Hydrological Geospatial Fabric (Geofabric), Bureau of Meteorology, © Commonwealth of Australia, CC BY 4.0. Castabout has changed them: filtered to the waters it covers, joined per water and reach, simplified, and rounded.
- Access routes (walking tracks, 4WD tracks and minor roads) are OpenStreetMap paths and roads from the Protomaps basemap. They show where a track is mapped, not whether you may use it: check access, gates and land tenure before you go.
- Access points come from the state and territory access datasets named on each place’s page.
Conditions and seasons
- River flows, levels and temperatures come from Bureau of Meteorology Water Data Online, CC BY 4.0. Each reading names its gauge’s owner, and the owner’s attribution appears wherever the reading does.
- Seasons and rules are summaries of each state’s and territory’s published rules. Each links to its source. The rules themselves are the source, not Castabout.
Software
Maps are drawn with MapLibre (BSD licence). Tiles are served with the Protomaps PMTiles Worker (BSD licence).
