Hatch

Zooplankton (Daphnia & Cyclops)

The microscopic "water fleas" at the base of the food web. Trout filter Daphnia and Cyclops at all depths in summer — nutritious and abundant, they impart the deep-orange colour to trout flesh, but they're essentially impossible to imitate with a fly. Important to understand (it explains scattered summer fish) more than to match.

Hatch timing / abundance

•
Summer especially; found at all depths; very nutritious and easily filtered gofishbc articles 2026 06.

Imitated by

•
Hard to imitate directly; the blob fly loosely suggests a plankton ball. Usually a reason to switch to bigger food (leeches, dragonflies) instead.

Found in (waterbodies)
