A largely natural NSW feeder of the Macquarie River, with brown trout in the headwaters near Sofala and redfin and carp alongside them.
The Turon River is a largely natural feeder of the Macquarie, and the reason to fish it is trout. Its headwaters near Sofala are described as holding large resident brown trout, though reaching them takes young legs and some daring. The upper river is said to fish best after good rain, when bigger fish show among the smaller ones. Carp are now thick through the river, so expect to sort through them to find trout. The lower river is a different proposition, with Murray cod and golden perch possible. Start near Sofala.

Access and safety

Sofala is reached by Sofala Road from Bathurst, or by Hill End and Sofala Road from the Mudgee Road at Ilford. Turon River National Park lies off the Mudgee Road (Castlereagh Highway), with a rough dirt road down to the river. The lower Turon and Macquarie can be reached by a bridle trail from Bathurst, and the lower river is described as having a few reserves where you can camp. Treat these as descriptions of where people go, and read the signs and fences on the ground.
