A small river through the Hartley Valley in NSW, long stocked with rainbow trout and fished with bead-head flies when it runs brown.
The River Lett is a small river through the Hartley Valley, between Lithgow and Mt Victoria, and it has been stocked with trout for a long time. It fishes well for its size.
It meets the Coxs at Glenroy, on Jenolan Caves Road. Start at Hartley Reserve, at the beginning of that road near the Great Western Highway; it is described as the best way to reach the water near historic Hartley. Hartley Reserve is said to hold rainbow trout of roughly 25 to 30 cm, with the odd larger brown.
The river is often discoloured, which can make fishing harder. When it runs particularly brown, a bead-head fly is suggested; when it is clear, fish a favourite pattern. Celters and soft plastics suit the shallow water, in smaller sizes.
Read the NSW DPIRD freshwater and trout guide before you fish.
