Much of the Cobungra is a long way from vehicle access. The most straightforward entry is at Anglers Rest, where it meets the Mitta Mitta, and FlyLife’s writers describe the lower stretches near there as easier to reach but hit-or-miss in summer.
Upper water near Mount Hotham is described as reachable only on foot or by 4WD. Two walking routes are named: the trail to Dibbins Hut, which gives high-country twigwater in the warmer months, and the Brandy Creek fire trail from Mount Hotham, described as a fit hiker’s route in. This is description only, not a statement of permission, so read the signs and any gate you meet on the ground.
As on any bush river, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back, carry water and a first-aid kit, and never wade a crossing you are unsure of.
